Casino bonuses can be a little confusing at times, it can make it hard to decide whether you should take one or not, if you don't understand what it is you are taking.

In this article I will help explain to you what Online casino bonuses are and how they work, that way you can decide if you would like to take one the next time you are presented with a bonus.

There will be a change as of March 2018 for UK customers regarding bonuses, this is explained at the bottom of this article.

WELCOME BONUS

WELCOME BONUSWELCOME BONUS

Casinos love to offer new customers attractive welcome bonuses, these come in the form of deposit matches sometimes as high as 400%. Extra spins on top of your deposit can also be included as another incentive. If you choose to accept one of these bonuses then you need to check the terms & conditions to see what type of bonus it is you are actually accepting.

This brings us nicely along to the terms Sticky bonus & Non sticky bonus.

STICKY BONUS

STICKY BONUSSTICKY BONUS

When you are reading through the terms & conditions that are attached to a bonus they are not going to say outright if they are either a sticky, or non sticky bonus. You have to look at the wagering requirements to determine which type it is.

If it states that it's for wagering purposes only, then you have yourself a sticky bonus, also known as a Phantom bonus. Let's break that down and look at what that means for you. For example you deposit €100 with a 100% match.

  • 100 + 100% match = €200 total playing money.

You now have a much greater balance to play with, but the down side of a sticky bonus is that when you beat the wagering and come to withdraw, the initial bonus amount is removed from your balance.

What you are likely to find though with this style of bonus, is that the deposit match will be a lot higher than 100% and the wagering may well be lower. The beauty of a sticky bonus is that it gives you the chance to play at a lot higher stake than what you would normally, whilst still only really risking the amount you initially deposited.

Each casino will have other terms & conditions attached to this type of bonus, so be sure to read them all in full so that you don't break them and void your potential winnings.

NON STICKY BONUS

NON STICKY BONUSNON STICKY BONUS

When you are checking the terms & conditions you will see that it will say for example, bonus x35 wagering requirement, or bonus x35 play through requirement. This is a non sticky bonus ( Cashable bonus )

So again let's see how it works out and what it means if you were to deposit £100 with a non sticky bonus.

  • 100 + 100% match = €200 total playing money.
  • Bonus = €100 x 35 = €3500 wagering requirement.

Again you have €200 to play with but this time there are no restrictions on your withdrawal, once you have wagered through the amount required, whatever balance is remaining is yours. ( unless specified in the Ts & Cs ).

The terms & conditions can vary quite a lot across different casinos, you could see up to, bonus x 70 wagering requirements, or deposit + bonus x 35 wagering requirements ( which is basically just bonus x 70 if it's a 100% match ).

The non sticky bonus sounds hard to beat but it's actually quite achievable and I've managed it on numerous occasions when taking them. Personally I think anything that works out at more than your bonus amount x 40 isn't worth taking, as you need to hit too many big wins to achieve the wagering.

These types of bonuses will come with their own unique set of T's & Cs, there will be a cap on the max bet you are allowed to stake, and certain games will be restricted or contribute less to the wagering.

Always read through these and understand them before you start playing, if you break any of them then the casino are well within their rights to void any winnings that you may have withdrawn.

PARACHUTE BONUS

PARACHUTE BONUSPARACHUTE BONUS

The parachute bonus is very favourable for players and offers you what you could call a second chance on your deposit. Lets say for example you have deposited €100 and received a 100% match.

  • €100 + 100% match = €200

With a parachute bonus this will display on your account balances as €100 cash and €100 bonus money, the beauty with this type of bonus is that you play with your real money first, if you hit a big win and decide you would like to cash out then you are free to do so, as your deposit is not tied in to the bonus money. If you do withdraw then you just forfeit the bonus money.

Once your cash balance has gone and you start to enter bonus money, you are then tied in to the wager requirements and the terms & conditions for that specific bonus, so you get another chance at trying to get a cash out if you were unsuccessful with your initial deposit money.

EXTRA SPINS BONUS

EXTRA SPINS BONUSEXTRA SPINS BONUS

The spins you receive on top of your deposit are known as extra spins, these are often at a very low stake on selected games. The amount of extra spins given can range from as little as 5 up to 100 or more.

Any cash you win from these spins then transforms to bonus money, it will state in the terms & conditions how this money is to be wagered. In most cases this money is the same as a non sticky bonus and will require a certain amount of play through before you are eligible to withdraw it.

NO DEPOSIT BONUS

NO DEPOSIT BONUSNO DEPOSIT BONUS

Certain casinos will offer you a free amount of cash to play with just for signing up with them, so you can try out a few games. There will of course be restrictions on this free money that they give you and one of them is a wager requirement.

This again is the same as a non sticky bonus, you will play through the free amount of cash so many times and then it will become withdrawable. There is usually a cap on the amount you are allowed to withdraw if you do win and any money over that amount becomes void.

UPDATE FOR UK CUSTOMERS REGARDING CASINO BONUSES

As from March 2018 the UKGC ( UK Gambling Commission ) are making extra spins ( free spins ) taxable as well as casino bonuses, this is going to increase the expenses for online casinos, so it could have an impact for players at some stage in the future with regard to how good the bonuses are that are offered to them.

Another change being implemented is that casino bonuses can no longer be tied in to your deposit money, this is going to make them all like a parachute bonus which is a good change for UK players and has made things a lot more fairer when it comes to accepting bonuses.

This again could have an impact in the future, casinos may start being reluctant to offer high percentage matches, so this is going to be a case of waiting and seeing how the online market reacts.

ONLINE CASINO BONUSES EXPLAINED FINAL THOUGHTS

It's a recurring message throughout my website, but you must always read and understand the terms & conditions attached to a bonus if you are going to accept it. Countless complaints against casinos are from players who have accepted a bonus only to break one of the terms & conditions and have their winnings confiscated.

Cash outs are possible from all of the above casino bonuses, you just need to understand the rules and keep to them.
